I fish the mississippi, how can I catch walleye?

Posted by Best Bass Fishing Lures on Sunday, August 29th, 2010

I can catch bluegill and sheephead by the cooler full, rock bass, perch, some catfish and smallmouth, but walleye have always been a problem. Crappie also. any hints on the right time of year, rigs(with a description or where to look), lures, structure, time of the day, etc. I fish between Lansing IA and Dubuque IA. Thankyou

Go north my man, go north. Come to Minnesota, home of the walleye. Sorry, had to rip on Iowa a bit, you know how it is. River fishing walleyes is quite hard at best cause they move so much. Fished a river most of my life, Thief River and Red Lake to be exact in Northern Minnesota, one day you do well and the next, they are gone. Walleyes are schooling fish so they move alot, so sayeth Gary Roach and the Linder’s. Honestly best luck i have had, is bobber fishing when the current isn’t bad and it can sit there. I kept it simple, literally a bobber, split shot and a #4 hook with a minnow or worm. Hook the worm once, maybe twice, but let the end dangle. Ya you get a lot of other stuff, but sometimes you get what you are looking for. Usually I fished by some sort of structure, bridge, log jam or a dam. Have had limited success, anchoring and throwing on a lindy rig and letting it sink to the bottom and let the current do the work instead of trolling. I have also jig fished in the Rainy River on Lake of the Woods, but i had to use a HUGE jig to fight the current. Did well, but it was hard fishing. Used a shiner there on the Rainy, had the best luck with that. My dad always said too, were there is perch and sheephead, there is walleyes, they all eat in the same area, at the bottom. I used to catch a pile of crappie on the Red Lake river when the flushed Red Lake using just a white mister twister or green and that was it and using a bobber. Sounds funny but it worked believe it or not. Spring is always the best, ice out during the spawn, in the morning. That has been my experience river fishing.
