I would like some advise on what kind of Fishing pole and Fishing rod I should get for bass and trout fishing?

Posted by Best Bass Fishing Lures on Monday, September 6th, 2010

I would like to keep the price around $120 for both rod and reel. Thanks
I was looking for a spining setup so I can use for both trout and bass fishing for around $120. I’m kind of set on the Abu Garcia reels but what model do you think? For the rod you think I should get a medium Abu Garcia rod? Thanks

Plenty of good combos available at Walmart, Big 5, or Cabela’s.

For 120 bucks you have loads of options. If I had to suggest one brand it would no doubt be Abu Garcia. I’ve used their products for years and will keep doing the same. They have setups anywhere from 30 dollar spinning setups up to 200 dollar baitcasting setups. You probably first want to decide on whether you’re wanting a baitcasting reel or spincast reel. For the baitcast (especially if you’re just starting out using them) there’s a really line called the Black Max Series. I’ve seen them for 60 bucks although I don’t necessarily like the rods they come equipped with. I bought the Black Max series reel by itself for around 50 then bought a 6’6 medium heavy Abu rod for 40. It’s a really cheap setup but they are great setups. If you’re looking for a higher end baitcast setup or reel, check out the Abu Garcia Revo. I own 2 of them and they are very nice and versatile. I’ve slow rolled spinnerbaits, cranked in swimbaits, jig fished, etc etc all on this reel and did great.

Yeah, for that money, you have lots of choices. If I had to have one rod and reel for both kinds of fishing, it would have to be a spinning combo. In fact for that money I could have an ultra light spinning combo and a medium to medium-heavy spinning outfit. Try the clearance section of Cabelas.

Abu Garcia makes GREAT bait-casting & conventional reels. (I own 2 C4′s, one C3 and WANT a Revo! lol)

However, (for some reason), their Spinning reels are “sub-par” compared to the other top 3 reel company’s, (Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger). Abu Garcia is just not well known as a “Spinning reel manufacturer” anymore…….Their designs are “archaic” and rarely have the same amount of “bells and whistles” of a comparably priced Shimano, Daiwa or Pflueger.

And it is well-known that Abu Garcia is not a “rod builder”.

At your budget of $120 I would suggest you purchase a more expensive reel than a rod-something like $70 for the reel and $50 for the rod. A more expensive reel will last longer than a more expensive rod…

Here are my picks for you. Please read the reviews on these suggestions-

    REELS

    1. Pflueger, President Series- 180 customers give this reel a 4.5 out of 5. I own a couple of these myself and they are tough, well manufactured reels- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_51666____SearchResults (The best part? This reel comes in under your budget of $70!)

    2. Gander Mt’s, Elite Metal- A “steal” of a buy! Gander Mt has a store-based after X-mas sale which includes 30% off all Gander Mt. rods and reels!! The higher end Gander Mt line of reels are MADE by Pflueger. You can get a Pflueger President/Supreme hybrid reel at Gander Mt for as little as $44!! This reel normally sold for $90. I got one right before X-mas….GREAT reel for the price. It’s construction reminds me of Daiwa’s “Hardbodyz” line. If you can find one of these on sale, GET IT!

    3. Shimano, Symetre (old stock)- Many company’s, (including Gander Mt and Cabelas), are getting rid of their old line of Symetre’s to make way for the newer model. Symetre’s originally sold for $100- you can get one NOW for as little as $70, (depending on where you look). Here is a Gander Mt ad selling one for $80- http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=411261&pdesc=Shimano_Symetre_Spinning_Reel&aID=504AA1&merchID=4006 These are GREAT reels!

    4. Daiwa, Exceler- A workhorse reel with a great reputation- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_91206____SearchResults

    RODS

At your budget of $50, you actually have very FEW choices for a decent rod for Bass AND Trout. (Unless you find an insane after X-mas deal at one of the “Big Four” sporting goods stores- DicksINC, Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mt)

    Here is some options:

    1. St. Croix, Triumph Series- A nice “entry level” St. Croix rod.- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_103653_100002002_100000000_100002000_100-2-2

    2. Fenwick, Iron Hawk Series- A Gander Mt “exclusive”. I own 3 of these rods and they are tough, well-made rods, (‘Course, I got mine for 30% off, which dragged the price down close to $30. But, the first one I purchased “full price” and still felt good about it.). A 7′ medium action would be an excellent length and action for Trout/Bass- http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=410577&pdesc=Fenwick_Iron_Hawk_Spinning_Rods&str=ironhawk&merchID=4005

    3. Berkley Lightning Rod Shock Series- There is no denying Berkley makes a good, inexpensive rod. Their new Shock Series is amazingly sensitive. This rod is probably your “best bet” for a super-sensitive rod at a VERY fair price- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_104159____SearchResults

    4. Ugly Stik Lite- Durable, lightweight, SUPER-inexpensive and MUCH more sensitive than the original Ugly Stik. If you decide to get this product MAKE SURE to purchase the Inshore version; only the Inshore version is “one-piece”- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_17946____SearchResults

Anywho, hope this info helps ya? Good luck in your search.

    (Thanks for the kudos BC)

Bravo Fisher_King! Best answer I’ve saw in a long time …

I actually have one of the President reels that he suggested and they are AWESOME! I am not a big spender on my fishing reels and rods (however I would be if I had the extra cash!) and the Pflueger President is the best spinning reel out there for under $100. STAY AWAY from Abu spinning reels. I own one and it’s pretty much JUNK. It’s very wobbly on the retrieve, the reel feels cheap, the innards are ALL PLASTIC, and the reel handle frequently loosens up to the point of the handle falling off all together while fishing…

St. Croix’s Triumph series must be a great rod. It is made by MY FAVORITE rod manufacturer, St. Croix. Medium action should do quite well for a trout/bass hybrid rod & reel!

Even though I’d MUCH prefer two rods & reels for trout and bass you can “get by” with one SOLID medium action rod and reel.

Once again best answer should go to F_K along with a thumbs up…

EDIT : Also, another reel you could quite possibly look at would be the Shimano Spirex… It’s the same price as the President. I don’t own one of the Spirex’s but they seem like good reels from the reviews. The double handle and blueish/metallic color drawed me in quite easily …
