Depending on where you would be fishing, I’d say for top water you would definetly want to invest in a buzz bait. It’s a very aggressive approach to aggressive eating fish in the summer to fall times. Also, a top water plug of some sort typically a popper triggers bass when fished near bulrushes, lily pads and near/over any types of emergent/submergent vegetation. As far as worms go I think that Berkely Gulp or Powerbait is a safe bet. They come in many shapes, colors, and sizes. In my opinion, spinnerbaits are a dime a dozen. Bright colors and flashy spinners for murky waters, natural looking, dull, dark colored skirts with colored spinners for clearer lakes. Crankbaits I don’t use a lot of so I can’t really speak of what I don’t know. That’s all I got.

well just go to a local owned and operated tackle store not a big chain like wal mart cause locals carry the right stuff for your area (or maybe talk to the older guy at the sporting goods at wal mart he might know) but you’ll want a dullish brown and tan/black (crawdad color) and firetiger (chartreuse/dark green/orange belly/black lines) are the two crankbait colors you absolutely have to have then get a chrome/blue back bill lewis rat-l-trap and for minnowbaits just have him get you a light colored one and a dark colored one same for worms (I personnaly prefer chartreuse and dark red colors as my light and dark colors) then lizards stick with them the same as the worms a light color and a dark color (sometimes you find that the fish won’t bite the worm you’re throwing even if you’re catching tons of fish on the same color lizard) you’ll want some light and dark spinnerbaits(ask if you can get the dark one with colorado blades on it and the light ones with willow leaf blades) and a light and a dark buzzbait
the worms and lizards should be just VERY slowly reeled across the bottom the cranbaits try to vary your retrieves( steady reel, reel in pause reel in pause, bouncing off of logs which i don’t recommend, and a sweeping retrieve where you pull your rod back very far then reel in the slack) now on to minnowbaits they work best with just a steady reel in throw out retrieve near the sides of cover (weedbeds, fallen trees etc.) but some weighted minnowbaits you jerk through the water (this works best on cold days or very hot summer days) spinnerbaits pull directly through weedbeds and some types of cover you can helicopter (let it sink down unhindered) the side of a log or other vertical structure you can slow roll across the bottom which i have found works best in the tailwaters of a dam or anything that your mind tells ya to do is worth a shot just about and buzzbaits as soon as they hit the water stick your rodtip high and reel fast enough so that the blades break the surface and you hear a buzzing sound lower your rodtip as it gets closer to the boat these can be fished at almost any structure but works best by points underwater weedbeds and fallen trees
this should be a good list of baits and tactics for you also see if you can get a guide to take you out on the lake one day they’ll show you the spots to fish and the baits to use for your lake plus your almost guranteed to catch fish
Good Luck And Tight Lines :)

Oh Man, I can only tell you that you are getting into a whole other area in the world of fishing. Spinner baits- crank baits-worms -lizards-top water -buzz baits-jerk baits-frogs-swim baits. The list is endless and you can spend thousands of dollars.
I have been Bass fishing since 1972 and have every kind of bait you can imagine and I still only have a small fraction of what is out there.
Get some 6 in. Power worms in red shad color and some 3/16 oz bullet sinkers, a pack of 3/0 wide gap hooks. Stick with what works for you. A 3/8 oz white and chartruse ,double willow blade #5 and #7 spinner bait. A Bandit 300 series in Spring Craw color. A Rebel pop – R for top water.
This will get you started and the will produce Bass and a lot of them if fished properly. Good luck and enjoy the pleasures of finding the best Bass baits.

for topwater I recommend a hula popper
for spinners and spinnerbaits I recommend a 1/16 ounce single bladed mini king spinnerbait (yellow w/ redeye or white w/ redeye)
for soft plastics try some fake minnows….I personally like Zoom minnows the clear Fluke color. Every bass fisherman and his brother throws a plastic worm out there…thinking outside of the box can go a long way
for crankbaits try using any type of rapala (perch color and hot steel are my favorite)
if you need any tips or advice send me an email or send a friend request. I fish all the time and can help ya out if you need it.

Well Bud, here is a list of the top 10 bass plugs ever so this is definitely a great start assuming it’s affordable to you, and after you’ve fished a few of these you will be able to determine what seems to work best for your area and your fishing spots. Good Luck out there

I use spinners all the time little ones and rubber frogs work great to so do rubber works with the hooks already in them for top water baits use a jitterbug lure in the early morning while it’s still dark i go to this pound and i catch largemouth bass , crappie , bluegill ive tried crank baits but never caught anything now iam on shore fishing i wasent on a boat. But yor best bet is spinners.

got to have some good hooks first of all. Gamakatsu makes an assorted pack of extra wide gauge worm hooks (http://www.gamakatsu.com/new_products/ne… i would go for that. you need good sharp hooks to catch bass. with those you will need some bullet weights (smaller sizes 1/8 oz up to 1/4 oz). I would also get some plastic worms in motor oil and watermelon colors (i like Gary Yamamoto brand Hula
Grubs http://www.baits.com/ . also get some 4 inch grubs or tubes in the same colors. when the bass don’t bite remember to go with smaller baits. plastics seem to work when all else fails. if the fish aren’t biting slow down your retrieve and let the bait sit on the bottom for a few seconds.
also make sure you reel is spooled with 10 pound test line. if you can match the line color to the water color of your favorite fishin’ hole.other than that the other answers are good.
    have fun and good luck

umm, ill help you for largemouth. i dont use crankbaits i only use topwater and worms, but ill help with what i can.
    Top water-
    mini torpedo.
    torpedo.
zoom horny toad(i caught my 10.5 pounder with this)
    worms-
zoom trick worms, june bug and pumpkin seed.
hooks- size 5, they wont catch alot of fish but they wont catch small fish.
and you dont need any weights.

i have really good luck with hardbody crayfish crankbaits. smallmouths just love ‘em. softbodied frogs and crawdads attract largemouth well and you’ll need some weedless rigs to go with them. and don’t forget a bottle of scent. works wonders.
