There are two types of tackle that work well for Smallies. Fly tackle and light spinning gear. For Fly tackle in rivers, 9′ 5 or 6wt fly rod with either a floating fly line or sinking tip fly lines. Floating lines are great for shallow water or fly fishing poppers. Sink tips are great for fishing streamers down deeper near structure where bigger Smallmouth line and feed.

For spinning gear I enjoy fishing a 7′, medium action spinning spooling with 8lb test. Depending on the size of fish and the amount of logs or structure, you may want to go lighter or heavier on your monofliment line. One nice thing about Smallmouth Bass is that they do not seem to be line shy but in gin clear water, a quality fluorocarbon leader works well.

i go fishinig about 4 times a week. go to a bait store. well first off let me say that i fish in a lake where there are a lot of grass and cover.. i go and i get flukes.. the 7 inch flukes and the ones i catch all mine on are the watermellon seedless or the purple flukes.. the make these hooks that are cruved big time. i dont know if you know how to do this but a place like bass pro will show you but texas rig it. it makes the lure weedless and that way you can throw around the weed and moss where BASS love to be at and wait for little fish to eat. and what does the flukes look like….. thats right….little fish. im learning alot more about fishing. if you ever want to talk more about fishing just hit me up at flembo2005@sbcglobal.net… i catch about 15 bass everytime i go out so they work.. hope i helped ya out man.

No one said the top smallmouth bait.

    GRUBs.

Go to a bait shop and get 3-4″ Grubs, chartreuse.

    Or get them at Mistertwister.com

A Rebel Crawfish is probably my favorite smallie lure. They come in a variety of sizes and color schemes. Simple leadhead twistertails catch a lot of fish too. Have the few reliable colors, chartreuse, black, white. (motoroil always works for me too). As w/ any fishing weather can play a huge part. A front can fire it up or shut it down depending. They love all kinds of cover. Everything you mentioned could be holding fish. I love casting a buzzbait early and late in the day… that is a blast!!!

Tony is on the right track, (thumbs up T).

More Smallmouth Bass are caught on 1/8-1/4 OZ Jigs with various Curly-tailed Grubs & trailers than any other “specialized” Smally lure.

Here are some of my top picks for Smallmouth Bass-

    1. Yum Crawbug- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_45768____SearchResults Use with a 1/4 OZ Jig or weedless Tube Jig.

    2. Gulp Curly-tailed Grub- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10203515_100005002_100000000_100005000_100-5-2

    3. Rapala Count-down Minnow- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_2840_100005002_100000000_100005000_100-5-2

    4. 1/4 OZ In-line Spinnerbait- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_98287____SearchResults?ordProd=Y&CMID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail

Understand that MOST of your Largemouth lures will work just as good on Smallmouth- Smallmouth are voracious fish that will try to hit things 1/2 their size!

Hope this helps ya? Good fishing!
