I’m going Pike fishing in the dead stream between Houghton lake, MI and 127. It has murkey waters, with channels about 6-8 ft deep x 20 ft across, running through a flood plain thats almost always has about 2 ft of water in it. What is the best lure or live bait to use? What part of the channel should I fish in? Any tips or tricks? Ive only reeled one pike out of here before, and I took it with a pike minnow. I mostly just wind up with bass or dog fish on my line.
I forgot to ask this, should I use a steel leader, Ive had a few pike chomp right through 15lb line.

This is a alternate drop shotting technique different from the normal slow method. During the cold winter months, I like to cast out, let sink to the bottom and use a fast shake/pause, fast shake/pause method. This sometimes triggers a reaction strike from fish that are otherwise highly pressured, cold or just not eating. I like to vary my presentation from time to time especially when it is a slow day , you need to get creative and this is just another type of the very effective drop shot method. The water temp was 51 degrees and fishing was super slow this day, then I varied my technique to the quick shake, the bites started to come. Give it a try, who know’s, it might turn a slow day into a great one. VISIT WWW.MESHHAT.COM AND FIND A GOOD LUCK FISHING HAT , T-SHIRTS AND MORE FROM MESH MATT.

I am going to Isle Royale (northern most part of michigan) and I am bringing fishing tackle and we are kind of depending on fish for our 8 day hike. I am an experienced fisher and I just want some pointers on inland lake fish. There are bass, perch, walleye, salmon, trout, catfish and the god aweful carp. Which would be the easiest way to fish for what fish? Bass I am not worried about, I know how to catch them, its walleye and salmon I want, and I am not sure the best way to go about it. Any info would be freakin sweet. thanks

I bought your dvd a few weeks ago after my friend invited me to fish in the McGregor Lake Fishing Derby. Usually its a ice fishing derby Lake Trout and Rainbows but the lake was unfrozen until late in the week when it started to freeze over. I made my friends watch your DVD and we were planning on Drop-Shotting in the morning and trolling the afternoon. With 1-2 inches of ice we used your technique and used 3in gulp jerk minnows Chartruse white. I caught my first fish in a (more…)
