thats going to be largely a matter of opinion. personally i use corn, i have used anything from bubble gum to a piece of string. just ask around once you are there, see what they are biting.

Soft plastics produce the best for me. I like lizards and crayfish in natural colors. Plastic worms also work good. I also like spinnerbaits.

Your question is very subjective and I will preface that I love top water fishing. I own a house that sits on a private pond near Atlanta, GA and the bass seem to love buzz baits and zara spook lures. They also like bass assassin crystal shad.

I have a lot of success with 6″ watermelon worms Texas rigged as well.

    ZOOM baits work well too.

get a few topwaters. zara spook, rebel pop-r, and a soft plastic frog or two. my favorite frog is the rage tail by strike king. you use it just like a buzzbait on a 5/0 hook and it is very weedless and effective in grass and weeds.
a couple spinnerbaits. one with a colorado blade and one with 2 willowleaf blades. mainly chartreuse/white but a couple extra colors won’t hurt.
a small assortment of crankbaits, both lipless and with diving lips. match the color of these to the forage in your lake. and shad. especially shad.
a small asst of 1/2oz football head, skirted jigs in colors to mimic crayfish. a few plastic trailers for these.
lastly and mostly, a good assortment of plastic worms in 5 or 6 colors, 4 and 6 inch lengths. a pack of 8 or 10 inch ones in black for night fishing. maybe a 4/0 hook for these. an assortment of hooks from size #1 to about a 3/0. worm weights too. 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 ounces and some splitshot.
plastic worms will work year round. more bass are gotten on these than ANY other bait. probably as much as any 3 or 4 combined.
go to cabela’s or bass pro shop or just shop their catalog. if you buy their own brands, you will save some bucks. theirs will work as well as national brands.
you should be able to fill a box with this list for not much more than a hundred dollars. maybe two, but l wouldn’t think so.
    good luck fishin’ and shopping.

buy one thing that just happens to catch your eye.
like a banjo minnow or a chatterbait. but SOMETHING.

Buy a spinner called the “Midnight Special”. Get it in black and blue if possible, but if it’s not, get one with all black, or black and another dark color. This lure is only good at night, but it is amazing. I have only seen it in action twice, and both times it failed. Those were really bad fishing times though, nothing would work. It’s only good from what I’ve heard from my cousin. What I’ve heard is that the second that it hits the water, BAM! FISH ON!

This is where you can get it in a store-
    -Dick’s sporting goods
    -Walmart

As you can see, everyone has a go-to lure they swear by. Most lures will work, the secret is having confidence in what you are doing.

If you are just starting out, I would recommend my favorite lure, a #7 floating Rapala, silver with a black back. Use a loop knot or a small split ring in the nose of it so you get more action.

What I liker most about this lure is that many fish will hit it when it is just sitting still on the surface. You can cast it out and do nothing and fish will eat it. Once you start to move it, then action differs by how fast, how smooth, and how much you work it back in.

You can just reel it in and it swims under the surface. You can twitch it on the surface and make it act like a dying fish. You can sweep your rod tip to the side, stop and let it float up then repeat it.

I love it most because if I lose my train of though and stop reeling, it just floats up, it does not sink down into the depths and maybe hang up on a snag.

    Try one, you’ll want more.

Thumbs to the Wormist! Check out more of the Wormist’s answers, he has some very informative answers relating to bass fishing. I would start out with a few spinnerbaits. 1/4 oz. mostly, in chartreuse w/white (my all time favorite bass spinnerbait color) but also get a black one for night fishing, and maybe a white. Get at least 3 Rat-L-Traps. 1/2 oz. but get 1/4 oz. also. Bleeding shad all the way. Get 3 lipped crankbaits. Sexy shad deep model, sexy shad medium diving model, and the shallow diver all from Strike King in the colors sexy shad. Maybe even get a BUZZ BAIT. Get a simple white pattern in 1/4 oz. And 2 top-waters. A walk the dog bait, and a popper. A rebel pop-r in green perch and a zara spook in baby bass. Both work extremely well when the bass are feeding on schooling shad. GET A BUNCH OF SOFT PLASTICS. Especially 6″ worms. Get a pack of motor oil color, purple color, grape color, black, and a pack of white. White works very good on a weightless Texas rig in shallow water. Get some football head jigs. In PB & J if you can find it. 1/2 oz. Get a pack of Chigger craws for trailers in the 3″ model. There’s many different kinds of bass lures. I left out chatter baits, hard swimbaits, soft swimbaits, and a few others.

    Happy fishing.
