I agree with fisher12 a med light graphite rod is the way to go. However, what is your price range? Walmart has a rod made by shakespear called the excursion $15. I’ve used it in tournaments against guys fishing Quantums, Berkleys, and even St. Croixs but have still placed above these guys. If you have the money to throw out there then look at Shimano Rods $40-$200 bucks or G. Loomis $200-$600
oh stay away from the ugly sticks…. the give on those things is so rediculous that you will only feel 1/3 of the fish that actually bite. they have very little sensitivity and do not give you the punch you need for a good hookset.

I’m an avid bass fisherman turned avid inshore fisherman in florida, and I have to say that it depends on your price bracket. If you want a good rod for a cheap price then ugly stik intercoastal is definitely the way to go. They sell for around $40 at wal-mart and worth every penny plus some. Just make sure you get the 1-piece, as every 2 piece pole has a weak point at the joint. If you’re really serious about fishing and are willing to pay an extra c-note or 2, then St. Croix is the best rod around in my opinion. You can get them at pretty much any sporting good store. No matter what rod you get just make sure you get one that’s a 7 footer as they cast further than the 6’6″ and 6′ rods. 7’6″ is a bit extreme in my opinion as I’ve had trouble with line tangle at the tip of the rod on windy days, especially when I use braided line. Good luck and tight lines.
