What is the best rod and reel for bass fishing?

Posted by Best Bass Fishing Lures on Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Please do not give me a type [ie. spincast], please give a specific model from a brand. For a rod, I have been looking at the Abu Garcia Vendetta, and the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Lite. I cannot spend anymore than $100, as I am a beginner. Thanks!

Spend about $100 for your reel and $100 for your rod if you want something that will last. A good mid-priced reel is the Shimano Citica, although the Abu Garcia REVO S and Bass Pro Shops Qualifier are also good choices. Either of those three reels paired with a Shimano Compre, Abu Garcia Vendetta, or Bass Pro Shops Bionic Blade rod would be an excellent set-up.

Ooops, just saw the beginner remark. In that case, if you don’t want to spend $200 for something you may end up not even using, look around at yard sales, garage sales, and eBay for older, used baitcasting reels and rods. You can find a decent starter baitcasting set-up at yard-sales for $20 – $30. DON’T go out and buy a Black Max, cheap-o Shakespeare, or whatever reel new, just to be out $50 – $60 which could have went to a quality reel or rod.

If you’re going for a spinning set-up, check out the mid-range ($50 – $70) offerings from Shimano and Pflueger for reels. Bass Pro Shops and Shimano also makes some inexpensive, quality rods.

If you mean you cannot spend $100 for the combo I would recommend a Quantum Bill Dance Baitcast Rod and Reel Combo. It is about 70 dollars for the two. But if u mean you can spend $100 on a rod and $100 on the reel then the Abu Garcia rod is great or the Skeet Reese addition Tessera Rod is good, too. The reel i would recommend would be a Bass Pro Shop Pro qualifier which is about $100

Hopes this helps and good luck.

ITS NOT THE BEST FOR ME, but it’s probably the best for you.

A buddy of mine has the Vendetta in a medium-heavy action spinning rod. He says its a good rod. I don’t like the split-grip foam handles though. I do think it would be a lot better than the Ugly Stik. And it’s only eighty-bucks for the VTCsixthree-five model which would probably be perfect for you.

As far as a reel goes, anything a hundred bucks or more is a “decent” reel. If you can do one-fifty for a reel, then look into the Ambassadeur Revolution S… the REVO I mean. It’s one-thirty. The Vendetta series rods are factory-tuned and precisely balanced to meet the weight and specifications of REVO and Soron reels. Load it with some good grade ten-pound mono and match it to the Vendetta rod I mentioned and you’ll be a damn good beginner.
